Do Something!   It is a better choice than doing nothing.

So we all have movies that we grew up with, movies that marked our lives in some way, for me there were really two this is the story of the first….

Well here on August 30, 2007, on the eve of me attending my first Dragon Con, I’m going to share a little story of the first movie that had an effect on me.

I was 8 years old, My older (by 5.5 years) brother came back from Denver after going to a Star Trek convention (he worked all summer, saved and saved to go to the convention so our grandmother let him). Anyway he came back and quickly sped through all the cool parts of meeting Uhura, Mr. Scott, and others…ran to his bedroom and whipped out this REALLY thick book and started reading it…I was curious, I grew up watchin reruns of Star Trek Saturday nights at 10:30 on our local ABC affiliate. (we were poor and I rarely got to stay up late, so it was a big deal to me and it stuck.) So I asked my brother…

Ditta (a family nickname) what is – “Star Wars”? “I’ve got a bad feeling about this…”

That was the beginning of a lifelong enjoyment. Though some will call it an obsession, you would certainly be wrong. Even if I have seen Episode IV in the theatre’s 148 times, yes you read that correctly…please remember how many times it has been released, re-released, re-mastered and released, and re-released, then add in the fact that it was the late 1970’s and my Grandmother could drop me off at the 1$ theatre and for $10 I could sit all day watch the movie 5 times with popcorn (or candy) and a coke for each individual showing.

While most folks came away wanting to be do gooder whiney boy – Luke Skywalker Jedi, with all the cool powers – Not me…

Or they wanted to be the Dashing scoundrel Han Solo (HAN SHOT FIRST – DAMN IT say it with me!) – again not me…

Flashy Rebel Y wing (always much cooler than the X-wing) Pilot? “all most there…” but not quite, that’s right you guessed it, not me…

Loyal Soldier of the rebellion fighting the good fight for no glory just to be on the right side – nope not me…

Prattling or annoying always beeping droi….oh please “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for…”

Nope the Rebel scum only had one thing I wanted…

That’s right Honey buns on her head herself….Leia - “You came in that thing? You‘re braver than I thought.” (yes even at 8 I wasn’t in puberty yet, but I knew what I liked!) – But while I wanted her…I certainly didn’t want to BE her…

(silly people you didn’t think I was going to post the “slave girl” outfit…thats not until episode VI – movie 3)

Super powerful deep voiced cool dude with all the spiffy “hold your hand out and choke a mother fucker” power….hmmm it would be cool to say… “I am the master now” ..Nope call me Darth next time…

(I think it was precognition…because young Vader was…well I’m sure you’ve seen the movies, his only saving grace was giving the ole’meat light saber to

(but that wasn’t until much later in the series…er I mean earlier…wow I have a headache…not The original Starwars…episode IV)

No for me it was a toss up either the silent, crimson clad Imperial Guard (likely what I would have chosen but there just wasn’t enough information about them…”your thoughts betray you…”

So that said I chose those ivory clad, highly trained, crack shot (snicker), all impressive, can blast your average rebel soldier from across a 2 parsec farm, with a hand blaster and one goggle covered, but can’t shoot a “hero” standing two feet in front of them with their backed turned….” Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?”

That’s it, the whole story, I’m about to go to one of the largest gatherings in the country of sci/fi fantasy geeks, and there will be tons of people there as Stormtroopers. And I was thinking about it….hence blog. (and you get a little look into my geek-childhood that some folks think I should “share” more. So there, that’s me sharing)
