Let’s get personal for a second…   9 comments

Look there are a lot of things that go on in the world, lots of that stuff is great, some of it is horrible.

Right now I want to talk to you very quickly about something that is very important to me.

As we all know, I’m an Ass and eyes man which really made me fond of this blog entry (and no I’m not scared of them.)

But there is another portion of the female anatomy that I am very fond of (as is any red blooded heterosexual male…)

I was In a Starbucks earlier tonight and overheard someone mention how they didn’t like how “commercialized” the Breast Cancer “thing” had become. This after seeing someone in a “Pink Breast Cancer Awareness” NFL Jersey , that she probably was only wearing the jersey because it was pink.

Well as those of you who know me personally well know, I’m not the most tactful person in the world. And I don’t mind speaking my mind to folks….So I was good actually and instead of blasting them. I simply looked at them and said.

I’m sorry to interrupt and I wasn’t trying to eaves-drop but, I couldn’t help but overhear. I just wanted to say that I lost a sister-in-law to Breast Cancer, she was 27, My Grandmother had Skin Cancer, My mom died of complications of lung cancer, and I’m a scrotal cancer survivor. And speaking as someone with that kind of experience with Cancer, please allow me to say, that I don’t give a rats ass how commercialized they make any cancer fund, so long as they find a cure. I’m sorry but you should check into the real world, Christmas is over commercialized, cancer research is under funded. Please, if Breast Cancer is too “Posh” for you, perhaps find a less “popular” version of Cancer research to donate to, but to say what you just said, that’s just shitty. – He just stood and gawked for a few, then he and his buddy walked out side got in a BMW and drove away without a word…losers.

The barista gave me my coffee for free…They had a donation jar for a local kid on the counter who had some medical issue (I didn’t look to see exactly what it was) So I dropped the coffee money in it, put a dollar in the tip box and moved on.

Yea sometimes I almost admit to being a bit of a yuppie…till I see one of those worthless oxygen thieves, driving around in a Beamer talking stupid shit like that.

Really I don’t care what cancer research fund people donate to, they are all good causes. But yea, Breast Cancer Awareness is commercialized, the idiot was right about that, but its not OVER commercialized…and if “Over commercialized” is what it takes, sign me up, I’ll wear the pink myself and I’ll pimp it as well! Go over to “Save the Ta Ta’s and Boobiethon.com have a look around.

Are some of the more “popular” but Wikipeda actually has a great listing of MANY different organizations…pick one, donate. You have my personal thanks.

  1. I love you big guy!!! You are the ABSOLUTE bomb (sometimes…) and see….. you CAN use your powers of “Asshole’ish” for GOOD at times!!!

    xoxoxoxox
    meow!

+++ Thank you, controlling my anger was difficult, and I teared a bit once the adrenalin had subsided. but the idiocy really got me.

  2. wow, you’re one of those people I admire. This is like the things you see in the movies, but wonder if there are people who are brave enough to stand up and actually say things to rude people.
Cheers to you for taking a stand and saying something, b/c even though they didn’t say anything, you know that they’re thinking about it. And if not thinking right now, there will be a time. The world just works like that.

+++ Thanks Mel. :) I’m not one for holding my tongue, but the real feet for me was keeping it civil. But I hope your right, I hope they are thinking about it. and not just saying “an then this asshole blasted me for not liking a pink jersey” to some other goober who thinks the same way.

  3. Hey if it wasn’t commercialized very few poeple would donate, all the screenings would not be covered by insurance, and the world would be a darker place.

+++ exactly Mike – You can’t OVER-commercialize a good cause. Not in my mind anyway. Not as long as the spirit reason for the commercialization stays in tact.

  4. I’ve been taken by surprise over the past couple of weeks at the number of commercial items I’m seeing that are pink and/or sporting the ribbon. (I about cracked up when I saw a rack of pink tic-tack breath mints.) I don’t know if the companies are actually donating any proceeds to cancer research, but I think they are actually helping to raise awareness just with the “in your face” pink prevalence. I also think it’s cool that this will be a month long thing — long enough to make it worthwhile for companies to invest in the advertising, short enough that hopefully people don’t become jaded.
We lost my mother-in-law to lung & brain cancer. It was fast and it was sudden and it was awful. She was 72 and should have had so many more years with us. I wish beyond words that there had been a cure that could have saved her, made her healthy, and given us so much more time with her.
Anything that will help achieve that goal should be celebrated, not denigrated.
Thank you for being brave enough to say something, dude.

Thank you PP but you know me..it wasn’t bravery, it was say something or explode. :)

Sorry to hear about your mom-in-law, we lost my Sister-in-law to a young Dr. who early on said – no it isn’t cancer, she’s too young for that….

As for if the items sold donate to Breast Cancer Research or not, all of the ones I’ve listed tell how much they donate per item. but even if they donate little or none…as long as they get the point across and people donate to the right places, I’m good with it. ;)
    hugs to you.

  5. Ulrich… Hats off to you for standing up and saying something no matter how it came out! I’ve had way too many friends batteling this yucky junk and you are right the more comercial it get’s the better for everyone! I buy pink stuff and wear it proudly and I get questions like ..”you’ve got all your hair still???” Or” Your cancer wasn’t that bad!” I tell them I wear the color to support all my friends who have won their battle and for those who have not, so that one day, no one has to lose the battle any more! Why don’t you donate instead of ask me questions like that. :) See you at an event soon!

    Hugs
    Flannait

Oddly I don’t get “you’ve got your hair still?” very much. ;) Seriously though…yea one of my favorites is…”your Cancer must not have been that bad.” I just stare at them for a second…and usually respond. Sure, your right it wasn’t too bad. why don’t you stand there for a few, and I’ll reach down and rip a lump the size of a golf ball out of your scrotum.” that usually shuts them right up. ;) (I really am rarely ever that crude, but the two times I’ve gotten “your cancer wasn’t that bad”…Its put me right out of my, “touchy feely mood.”)

Hugs back to you Flannait, and I’ll happily see you soon.

  6. Thank you for speaking up. It is too often that people let others walk by in absolute stupidity. Cancers are touching more lives every day. As a marketer, I know that I am a part of the commercialization of the world. I am from New Orleans. When hurricane Katrina hit, everyone yelled that the companies that went in there to help were just there to commercialize their company name. But, you know what, I do not give a fuck who went there to help or what their motivation for helping would be. What I cared about was that there were (still is) massive destruction to human lives and to one of the most flavorful cities in the world. So, there was a company sending water in bottles with label and another sending shirts with logos. At least someone cared enough to send water and clothes….more than the government did….or has continued to do! The same holds true for Cancer Research and the background investigation into WHY cancer is on the rise in the US. You have inspired me…Thank you.~~Dee

+++ You are welcome Dee, and your right, I’ve never known anyone who REALLY needed help, to care where the help came from. and I don’t care where the cancer help comes from…as long as it comes. =D

  8. Sir Ulrich,

    Thank You.

I am a boob man, I admit it! But more seriously, my mother is a breast cancer survivor. I don’t have a blog site of my own yet, so please forgive me but I am going to share my story here on yours. My mother was 36 years old when the doctors found lumps on her breasts that turned out to be benign. She was, however, told that she needed regular mammograms. She never did. At 55, she had breast cancer. She lived in a small community in Oklahoma, and they started a collection for her treatment at the local bank. her husband decided that he couldn’t deal and the &*(#*)&$ scumbag took all the money and split to Canada or something.
The American Cancer Society stepped in and payed for my mother to have a double mastectomy and subsequent chemotherapy. She is alive today because of people that support ACS and The National Breast Cancer Foundation. For that, I thank you and everyone who has ever given 1 penny to cancer research.
She is, however, somewhat at fault for the seriousness of her condition. If she had received the mammograms like she was originally told, she most likely could have caught it before it required a double mastectomy. She is lucky to have lived through it, to be honest. So any women who read this – please – take this serious. IF you are at risk, PLEASE get your mammograms. If you are not at risk, still consider it, and if you are at the age where you should get them – get them. Men – encourage your wife, girlfriend, friends, whoever- encourage them to be mindful of this. Be there for them and support them. Not only are mammograms painful, but they are emotionally humiliating (or so I’ve been told…) so do what you can to ease the pain for them, both physical and emotional.

I don’t really say a lot, but this is something important to me, so I had to post. If you’ve read this far, thank you for indulging me.

And besides, the world needs more boobs!!

    In Service,
    Aidan

+++ Aidan, You are always welcome to post here…and that was a most worthy post. to it I will only add…Ladies, we love you all, Please check yourselves regularly, and get your exams, there is no such thing as not at risk, if you have boobies you are at risk. And yes, though its rare, guys you need to check yourself too…and not just “the boys” (though let me tell you when you do and you count “3″ it is VERY disturbing) but on topic. men CAN have breast cancer, as well. everyone should check.

  9. Whoo..hooo… Hi Aidan!!

That was really wonderful of you to tell your Mom’s story with the rest of us! It really is important! And self exams really are so easy to do that we should be catching a lot more breast cancer early.

Hope to see you around the blog-o-sphere more!

    Hugs,
    Cinnkitty
