Thats right ladies break out the fur bikini’s …the latest greatest find PROVES beyond a shadow of a doubt that Norse women dressed like “Hoochie Mama’s”….  ;)

O.K. well not quite “hoochie mama’s”…  and I’m sure there is much more research to be done, but here is a rather interesting article that may EVENTUALLY end up with some change to our knowledge of the period and what we *knew* they wore….way back when.

click the text to go to the article: Viking Women Dressed Provocatively   (hey they named the article not me.)
But it gave me an excuse to post some eye-candy….raise a few folks heartbeats….and then still perhaps spread some ‘new’ information.

Credit to Legio Draconis for turning me onto this article.

*warning* Ladies, you should use the power of the fur bikini with care.  The fur bikini is not for everyone, if you are not sure if the fur bikini ‘suits’ you, or you it….find the most honest forthright person you know and ask them.

now back to your regular every day boredo….er blogdom.

  1. IMO, poor research, and further evidence that even a good archeaologist can be mistaken. I have to also say – zero sexual appeal, and also the unfortunate assumption with the brooch placement that the “sexy” woman’s boobs hung to her waist – it wouldn’t work at all with those proportions if you put it on my body or Glenna’s or Thora’s… or most of the women we know. We won’t go into the undergarment discussion either… Nor is this new, Thor Ewing details it sans train- but it is impractical. I’m not thinking the average Viking noblewoman is dragging a big train around, and you don’t see so much evidence from it in period artwork, even on goddesses and queens, where you might expect.
I could go on for pages, but I already did that on Florentine Scot’s blog on LJ.
Now I can buy a more sexually assured pre-Christian Viking dress, but that has more to do with apron cut – and they have a bunch of examples. And as with modern clothing, cut varies with body type. Duh. But the dates don’t match either – by the year 1000, Scandinavia is already Christianized in name, and there are major incidents of Christians mass-slaughtering non-Christians who refuse to convert. Iceland’s Thing is already voting on accepting Christianity.
I love speculative archaology, especially with clothing and textiles, but damn I wish I knew Swedish so I could deal with this woman academically!!! Unfortunately for me (actually not at all) I am only dealing with conservation of 19th c. textiles right now.
As for the pictures you posted, well, I’d wear it. But that’s a different thing.

+++ Believe me G I get that it is poor research. ;) but it was an excellent opprotunity to 1) get the correct information out there via you and others. 2) poke fun at ‘mainstream’ archeology. and c) post a picture of a chick in a fur bikini…. :D

and yes’ you’d look fab in that bikini.

  2. Gwen is so nice in her commentary. :-) All I could muster through the reading was “Who is this person and what was it they saw that made them think this?”

It’s easy to look at ONE thing from ONE gravesite and say that’s the way EVERYTHING was. On the other hand, there are lots of runestones, amulets and tapestries, created by artists from the period, depicting everyday clothing and NONE of those interpretations look like the woman in that picture! None of them.

Obviously, no one knows for sure, there just aren’t enough surviving garments from the Viking age to put together a sure-fire answer. The article is “interesting” reading but I can assure you… THIS Viking chick won’t be making any changes in her wardrobe because of it! :-)

+++ Disa I don’t expect anyone to change their outfit because of this one find….and likely yes they got some of it wrong, and yes there is a lot of speculation and extrapolation in what we do…but who knows after a bit more research of this site..you MAY get a new outfit you can add to your wardrobe….or maybe not. ;)

  3. I think a little more investigation is in order. Perhaps modeling the different pieces of wardrobe…? with the appropriate models of course… couldn’t bear to see Ulrich wearing a fur bikini… lol

+++ Yea I think a different model could really help out the outfit….if you are going to say ‘vikings wore provocative clothing’ then you need to put a ‘provocative’ woman in the clothing….few ‘sexy’ items look good on someone who looks like my grandmother. (ew).

And why oh why would you put the thought in anyones mind of ***ME*** in a fur bikini…that is just WRONG! Luckily I have the fur bikini picture on my blog to wipe that mental image out of my mind. over, and over again! ;)
